Benefits and Details of Study Methods in our ESL classrooms

Learning English as a second language can oftentimes be daunting and overwhelming for  ESL adult learners. In this document, I have provided a few detailed study methods  that will assist your students in achieving their language learning goals.

  1. Study Method 1:  Multi Purpose Flashcards

Benefits: vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation

Details: using flashcards, students can be introduced to new topics in English such as: Vocabulary lists, new grammar structures, and even using different types of pronunciation methods.

  1. Vocabulary lists

  2. On the front of the card you can write the new word

  3. On the back, you can write the part of speech, meaning, translation, and how to use this word in a sentence. 

            b.  Grammar structures

2. On the front of the card, you can introduce a new collocation, determiner phrase, noun phrase, verb phrase, preposition phrase etc

- Front: Noun Phrase

-The Big Kitchen

Back: dissect the phrase grammatically:

- determiner + adjective + noun = the big kitchen, 

the is a determiner, determining which kitchen

big is an adjective describing the noun, kitchen

the adjective will come before the noun. 

Front:  compound words

Lipstick

Back: what kind of word is lipstick? It is a type of stick

(a colored stick used to add color on the lips).

 English compound words typically will be defined as the last word. 

- For words with affixes, you can describe the tense, plurality of the word, or what the specific prefix or affix means in relation to the word.

Front: misbehaving

Back: prefix + root word + present verb tense = misbehaving

Mis (wrong, bad) Behave (root word- to act in a certain way) + ing (present verb form , currently) 

Definition: currently acting badly

3. On the front of the card, you can introduce a new word. On the back, you can break down the words into syllables, sounds, onsets, nucleus and codas, along with the IPA.

 



  1. Study Method 2: Read aloud

Benefits: For Audio Learners

This website is a  helpful tool for all students. This website will provide 20 free minutes a day for individuals who would like to listen to a natural voice read a text, pdf file, or even an excerpt from a textbook. (this tool can also be used while you are doing chores or even working out) 



  1. Study Method 3: Using new vocabulary words in context

Benefits: vocabulary comprehension 

 This site will provide example sentences with any given word OR phrase that you input into its search bar. This tool will provide an extensive list of examples with any given word / phrase so that you can understand how to use the new phrase in context.
