By Kate Ye
This is a guide to teaching multiple grade levels in one classroom. The teacher will have
to gather materials based on each level, such as informational texts, graphics - etc inaddition to individual assessments according to grade level and topic to be discussed.
Teaching method difficulty: 2/5
Example
:3 different levels - same subject : English
For this topic, we will discuss “Summarizing a text”
For each grade level, provide the students a summary worksheet and text about the learned skill according to the level. Each grade will have different terms to focus
on.
The first group (4th graders) will have the terms “summary” “theme”, the second group (5th and 6th) will also have their own terms regarding summarizing, such as “main idea” “topic” the third group (8thgraders) will have their own text to analyze with terms and examples of brevity, 5whquestions, and what types of media we can summarize. The class will
silently read their own terms and text sheets for 5 minutes. The teacher will then start a discussion , asking each student what interesting points they have read in the individualized text. The teacher will also prompt questions such as“what does theme mean?” “where can we find the main idea?” “What are the 5whquestions?”
The teacher will write on the board all the points the class discussed.(Students are also free to come up to the board and write their ideas too - TPR) Afterwards, the class will work on a
task based on the topic, but according to their own grade level of difficulty. (ie longer texts for older students)The assessment will be based on this worksheet
The teacher can have the groups peer to peer grade each other's papers and give
feedback so they can learn from eachother, or the teacher can provide individual feedback as wel
