Teaching nouns and action verbs: a guide

Teaching nouns and action verbs: a guide

By Kate Ye

This will be a guide to teach ELL or ESL learners nouns and action verbs.

Teaching difficulty: ⅕

Compile a list of nouns and verbs. First, list the nouns and ask the student “Can you see (proper determiner + noun)?”  (ie Can you see the moon?) The student will answer yes, and the teacher replies “so if we can see it, it's a noun-it can be a person, place or thing. If we can answer yes to “can we see it?” its a noun. Keep drilling the student with this question with the list of nouns compiled.

Do the same method with verbs, but ask the question “Can you (verb + proper tense)?” (ie Can you run?) The student will answer with a yes, and the teacher replies with “so if its something we can do, its an action verb. If we can answer yes to “can we…? Its an action verb '' Keep drilling the student with this question with the list of action verbs compiled.

Then, mix the verbs and nouns in random order and ask the student the questions of “can you see (verb)?”(ie Can you see run? ) “can you (noun)?” (Can you the moon?) to drill the student into understanding how to discover if a word is a noun or action verb (by asking if they can either see or do (noun/verb).

i.e

Can you dance?

*Can you see dance?

Can you pencil?

*Can you see a pencil?
